A common enemy is an opportunity for Jewish and Muslim minorities in the West

Prediction Sep 20, 2017 (Rosh Hashanah Eve): Western Muslims who disagree vehemently with their Jewish friends about overseas Israeli- Palestinian issues are going to unite with them to fight Neo-Nazis on domestic streets.

Let’s get the Kosher and Halal elephants out of the way now.

Some of my closest Jewish friends, colleagues, and peers and I are in constant disagreement. I say there’s an occupation of Palestine, they say that is not possible because you can’t occupy something that belonged to them. I say Israel has all the power and suppresses and dehumanizes Palestinians, they say if Hamas would stop Israel wouldn’t have to respond with force. I say Hamas is a ragtag group, they say… You get the point. This has been going on for oh since forever, and will forever. Sometimes it’s polite, sometimes it’s a fight.

But I love my Jewish friends in my home of Toronto, Canada and the US ones too. Like L-O-V-E. They have mentored me spiritually, professionally, been there for me at my worst, and come from secular, to cultural, to orthodox, to left wing Zionist, right wing Zionist, and even anti-Zionist. We share lots of Canadian/American things (like a love of Seinfeld’s soup Nazi episode) in common and our faith often makes us outsiders in many circles.

I would protect them with my life.

With Nazis on the web and streets. I am going to have to.

The same ugly rhetoric that led to gas chambers, and the Holocaust, is being joked about, tweeted about and re materialized. From Canada, to the US, to Europe it digitally dashes.

Sitting with my Jewish friends, they often explained that Antisemitism has never gone away. No matter how successful Jewish communities look to Muslim communities who often wonder why we can’t emulate their reach and influence. Also in fairness to my friends Anti-Israel Zionist sentiment can double as Antisemitism very easily for Muslims and especially Arab Muslims (of which I am not: Canadian-Pakistani kid so different context judge me or not) so our apologies. Not for our views politically but of letting our friends think we hate their faith that is the closest to our own Islamically.

So all of this Antisemitism existed Prior to World War 2… no actually since the Romans blamed the Jews for Jesus’s death actually, but has been reincarnated and just keeps growing. Right now. The same stuff Hitler used. HITLER…

Fuck that shit. Even if the supremacists and Nazis didn’t hate Muslims I would still fight them for my friends. But of course the hatred for Jews by Neo-Nazis and their sympathizers is matched or potentially even eclipsed by their hatred of Muslims.

So can we Shalom-Salam our way to destroying them together?

What if a generation of talented “Western” Muslims and Jews (and other allies) used their faith, and their secular influence to not ignore the real disconnect between us but maybe use a TRUE common enemy that hates us as a medium for social mobilization in a coordinated way?

Maybe it would build deeper bonds. Maybe not. I’m not naive, this isn’t going to solve issues that are not solvable, but who knows what working together could bring?

Let’s go all Avengers on their asses, with Kipas and Qurans, with Torahs, and Topis. With Kosher and Halal “slaughtering” white supremacist ideas online that lead to real violence in real life.

Where secular Jews can stand with Orthodox Muslims, and where Cultural Muslims can stand with Devout Jews.

Let’s in faith be the cousins we were supposed to be. Abraham’s children. Of Ishmael/Isaac and Isaac/Ishaq and put aside who actually got sacrificed but let’s US ALL SACRIFICE. So our kids can be friends, and don’t have to grow up in a world where there is a hashtag #Gasthesynagogue or be under constant threat just for being Muslim 16 years after 9/11…

A lot of people criticize Muslims for passages in the Quran (I’ll wait while you Google) that would imply Islam hates and is here to fight Jewish people’s….

No. We are here to fight Nazis. With them.

Shana Tova friends.
